Spring lawncare

Hopefully you will have kept mowing occasionally during the winter and got your mower serviced, and the blade sharpened . The first two or three cute on a high setting without removing more than a third of the height of the grass at any one time.

Weed control.  As temperatures rise in the soil weeds will start to grow and new seeds germinate.  You can use a selective herbicide to get these controlled from early April onwards.  Weed control is part of our lawn treatment programmes and you can expect essentially a weed free lawn without the worry of getting it wrong doing it yourself.  See our weed treatment service page for more information.

Moss control. Moss is best controlled in the previous autumn and winter but you can still safely treat moss in April.  Any later and you risk damaging the lawn.  See our moss treatment page for more information.

Spring fertiliser application.  Lawns respond well to spring applications of nutrients but get the balance of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium right.  Too much nitrogen is harmful.  WE are always happy to advise on nutrients programmes – see our fertiliser application page for more information.

Spring renovation.  Typically the autumn is the best time of year to undertake major mechanical work on lawns.  However on as  case by case basis it can be OK in the spring too depending on the weather and the specific lawn issues. Whether you are intending to scarify, aerate, top dress or overseed a whole lawn or repair patches or specific areas – you can in the right conditions alleviate compaction, thicken up the lawn and put in the work for a great lawn in the early mid summer.
