Autumn lawncare

Autumn is the perfect time of year for any major renovation or improvement work on your lawn.

Aeration.  There are lots of benefits to the lawn from aeration.  These include improved flow of oxygen and nutrients around the roots and alleviation of compaction.  Professional aeration with a solid, hollow or fracture tines is the best answer but if access is difficult or on small areas aeration with a fork can be effective too.

Scarify and overseeding. Some lawns benefit from a light scarify every year others less regularly depending on the build up of thatch over time.  When aerating or scarifying, overseeding injects some new growth into the lawn and refreshes the sward for the following season and is good practice.

Leatherjackets:  if you see a lot of craneflies (daddylonglegs0On the lawn in September and October you may be at risk of a leatherjacket infestation.  We can control leatherjackets with a special treatment and it will stop a huge amount of damage in severe cases.

Leaves, leaves and more leaves: the scurge of lawn lovers in the autumn.  Thewy do enormous damage and regularly blowing or raking them up is well worth it.  Left they will reduce the lawn to  bare earth in a few weeks and recovering from this state takes more work the following season.  Apart from that lawn mulch is great for the rest of the garden.
